In 2013 I was guided toward a man, on the recommendation of an elder woman I danced with, who worked some “magic” with breath and body work.
I could not have ever prepared myself for the somatic, life shift I experienced after one session. For many days after I had access to a resourcefulness and resilience in my nervous system I had not had since I was a child- since before trauma.
From that point I underwent a series of personal sessions and began exploring breathwork with clients. Right relationship and safety are virtues when working with all healing modalities- especially ones that have the capacity to altar states of perception as the breath does.
So, I found a teacher, and became “certified”. I chose him because of his humility. He does not trademark the breathwork like so many others. He has been teaching for decades and walks a good path.
The breath does not belong to anyone. Yet, it is vital to understand the dynamics of trauma, the nervous system, societal stories and archetypal and astral dimensions before entering into, or holding space with, anyone. Only you can know if you are in right relationship and integrity with anything you do. The breath has taught me a lot about this.
I have seen hundreds of people through the practice of engaging with the breath as a healing ally. Here is what has become truth for me through my experience in holding these spaces.
~The breath is the Midwife of Life. It holds the Great Mystery of how we are all woven together and supported by more than what we can see. It is made of Tree and Sun, Star and Ancestor. The oath that you took with Life to steward your gift in a good way is in the breath. You said Yes to be nourished and supported by Source as you cried out from your Mother’s womb. You took a breath before you suckled your Mother’s breast. It teaches humility and reverence like few other things can. We are so delicate. Breath is life.
~In one session I have seen the breathwork rewire epigenetic patterns of trauma that have been held for generations. When engaging with the breath in a healing way we are asking Life to come fully into our cells and show us all the places we don’t trust, hold, tend to and align with life. These blockages are typically full of story and sorrow and pain and trauma and fear- so you meet all that. The most interesting piece of the breath is that there is NOTHING between you and your life Source; no plant, no potion. (As much as I love my plant allies) You get to meet all of the parts of yourself where you turn away from your life and reframe the story behind them. You may begin to reopen the channels to fully receive the full truth of your being- that you are love, made by love.
~The breath works on every aspect of our being. The physical body moves into somatic response as the nervous system releases old stories, the chakra/energy system of the body is stimulated and cleared out. The hyperoxygenation can clear diseases of stagnation. Your mind surrenders and your heart comes back online as the main navigating system of your Life.
How it works~ What to expect
To activate the deep healing that the breath can catalyze you must stay engaged. It is not easy, thankfully. I love the breath because it teaches us how healing is a relationship. Nothing and no one can ever do a thing for you- you must engage if you want to “reach the other side” of what holds you back.
It is a rhythmic circular breath that moves deep into the body and activates the diaphragm into a pumping that then begins to stimulate the vagus nerve, the organs and move lymph, blood, oxygen and chi through the body at a heightened pace. There are many different ways to breathe and I focus on one or two that I have worked with- one river many wells. The key is continued engagement along with witness and curiosity.
Often there is music accompaniment to accelerate us into a space of release. Music is a medicine that lends itself to opening the heart and can move memories and emotions to the surface without a lot of leading and projection.
A safe and trauma aware setting is vital for this journey. Your intentions will ally you. You are free to enter into this container in any way you like. However, we are dealing with the Divine and your tender parts- both deserve the highest regard and a safe container to fully unfold.
Integration is necessary. This is a deep healing and you can only begin to trust this Life source when you see your mundane life shift. The medicine lives in the daily practice.
As with all of my offerings I assess if there is a readiness for this level of work. I do not hold sessions or mentor with anyone who is not willing to take ownership in their process. This is a loving act. We don’t push ourselves beyond where we truly are.
Once you learn how your nervous system responds you can begin to hold this space for yourself. I privately mentor others in how to work the breath into the tool box of life- to hold space for yourself and others.
Due to the rapid metabolizing of stagnant emotions, trauma and physical congestion, the body can experience a vast array of sensations in response.
- Hot and cold fluctuations
- Surges of emotion
- Contraction in the legs and arms
- Quivering in the face and mouth
- Potential DMT release
- Tetanus~ this is a, often painful, contraction of the hands to turn inward and claw like. There are many physiological and metyphysical explanations for this. Honestly no one really knows- I have my take on it and we can discuss this in person.
- This is not hyperventilation- you are entering into this process consciously.
- Visionary states
- Potential DMT release.
- Suppressed memories return
- Kundalini awakening
- Heart opening where compassion, grief and gratitude becomes gnosis
- The veil to the other worlds is pierced
The breathwork is a path and a relationship to be cultivated. This is not the little blue pill and it is NOT for everyone.
- Current or history of seizures
- Heart problems (depending on the condition-we will talk)
- Current or history of psychiatric episodes that rendered hospitalization or medications.
- Severe trauma, hypervigilent nervous systems, disassociation.
- Asthma (however I have seen it clear asthma-so this is a discussion)
- Please inquire if you have any of the above conditions.
- Are 90 minutes in length for mentorship, journeying and integration time.
- Can be in person or online.
- Require a comfortable space to lie down, free of distractions.
- Please do not eat a large meal before sessions.
